The Pull of Paradise: Images from Florida Springs
ORLANDO, July 17, 2006 -- The UCF Art Gallery will be presenting new work by Rebecca Schrock in an exhibition titled "The Pull of Paradise: Images from Florida Springs". The photographic and multimedia work will be on display August 16-30, 2006. The multimedia installation examines the coexistence of nature and culture at Central Florida's natural springs. These crystal clear springs, connected through the vast network of the Florida aquifer, draw thousands of visitors each day.
Sittler, Assistant Professor in Art at UCF, and several students collected photographs and video of the springs along with stories from local residents. The installation explores the crossover between the authentic and the simulated landscape, comparing people's perceptions, memories, and subjective impressions of their natural surroundings. The imagery embraces the beauty of these places with the unruly characteristics of their contemporary realities.
This project was sponsored in part by an In-House Research Grant from University of Central Florida. Charles McCurry, Jessica Libes and Natalia Roman, students who have collaborated with Schrock on the exhibition, are also exhibiting their own perspectives and interpretations. An informal artist talk will be given on Thursday, August 24th at 10am. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Location & Tours: The UCF Art Gallery is located in the Visual Arts Building (Bldg. 51 on the campus map). Free, guided tours are available for groups, classes, and other organizations. Please call to schedule an appointment.
